This usual for this forum? I think among the last 30 people who've signed up in the last 4 days, 2 have been genuine members (Fenix and RikaPSO).

The closest thing we had before was mass bot registrations, but I don't think they actually posted anything. From what's been discussed by the staff, it seems that the security measures to prevent this from happening have been cracked (as many other phpBB users are reporting this exact same situation).

Here's a post at phpBB's temporary forum concerning this.

It's getting to be a little bothersome, we're banning several of them a day, but we're looking into ways to try and stop it.

Well to be fair, if its a recently discovered exploit its possible a phpbb update will be released and the problem will just sorta solve itself.

ololol thats what I get for not reading. Try not to break the forums trying to fix this, guys!

We can't promise we'll try, but we'll try to try.

Hah! That's what you get for using captchas! Now bots register more easily than users!

The only reason we started using them was because we had a bunch of bots registering. :<

But yeah, there probably will be a phpBB update of some sort to fix it, but I wouldn't expect it for a while, since their website got DDoS'd or someshit.

Their website got hacked because they're morons that don't understand security. See http://hackedphpbb.blogspot.com/ for a detailed explanation of how the guy did it. It all dumbs down to "they didn't update their PHPlist installation" with a small nuance being that the PHPlist maintainer is a moron too and that his latest release is still hackable, even if this specific vulnerability is fixed.

For bots I find Akismet the best strategy. They'll still register (can't really do anything about that except prune accounts regularly) but their spam should be filtered. Assuming there's a plugin of some sort for PHPBB.

Here it's probably something like admin / psupedo too.

Moving this to the forum forum, because that's where it should have been to begin with.

Anyway, last night I added a custom profile field required for registration, and we haven't had a spambot since then, so hopefully this will keep it under control for a while.
