There's no real appropriate forum for this, so I'll stick it here. Famitsu magazine announces a new Phantasy Star game - Phantasy Star ZERO - and it appears to be based off of PSO, not PSU, while still having a unique look to it.

http://www.gamekyo.com/news28961_sega-a ... do-ds.html

- Character Designer : Toshiyuki Kubooka (The Idolmaster, Lunar Genesis)
- Scenario : Tooru Shiwasu (formerly in charge of the online quest on the original PSO, now a writer)
- Scenario : Teru Arai (mystery novels writer)
- New in the PSO series
- Multi play over Nintendo WiFi connection
- Chat system supports sending of stylus sketches (Something like Pictochat)
- Blow into DS mic to send message
- Huge Dragon: Rayburn

Scans from Famitsu

http://img139.imagevenue.com/img.php?im ... _999lo.jpg

Not sure if there's a place for this on the wiki since it's the PSUPedia, not the PSPedia, and this game seems to have little, if anything, to do with PSU (that it contracts to PS0 might be a deliberate hint of something to do with PSO), but if people want we can at least start a section on it I guess.

Oh, nice. Unexpected, but I don't mind!

Looks like they're trying to cover some of the race-job combos that never made it to PSO. The character in the lower right of that mass of people is listed as a HUnewm and the girl toward the top right is a HUmarl.

I've had a little more time to go over these scans, so I'll relay what little other information there is. (Honestly, there just isn't that much there.)

* NeoGAF's assumption of this being a new part of the PSO series is a bit off. I guess it can't really be confirmed one way or the other, but all the article says is that ZERO is an entirely new game that "borrows heavily from PSO." No mention at all of a direct connection to PSO (as in a sequel or prequel).
* There will be a single-player story mode.
* The game will support up to four players both online (via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection) and through local area connections.
* Visual chat is basically an in-game version of Pictochat. (In fact, it's actually called "Pictochat" in the screenshots.)
* Your chat options include "chat" for writing out text and "symbol" for drawing pictures. (It's not confirmed, but I assume you'll be able to save a certain number of your drawing as shortcuts. After putting as much time into them as some of the examples show, I'd hope so.)
* Chat can be used in the fields and in lobbies. It appears that lobby actions will also return (notice HUmar dude jumping with his right finger in the air in the city picture).
* Three fields have been named: Glaceas Ravine, Riou Snowfield and Ozett Swamp.
* One boss was revealed, a dragon known as Rayburn.
* New features will be added to the battle system, one of which is a chain system. No details are given, however.
* The bottom screen will display your HP and PP (I assume this works just like TP did in PSO), action pallet (it appears that the R button will swap to a second pallet), map, chat options and your teammates' HP. You can press the start button to access the menu, and there's also your little connection strength indicator for online/wireless play.
* Scheduled to be released in Japan some time this winter.

My interest is piqued. This isn't just a port like PSU PSP was, but a whole new game styled similarly to PSO. My first worry would be the controls, but then I realized PSO didn't have a free camera, so they could mirror the DC controls pretty well on a DS. And then there's the fact that playing imports on a DS is so much easier.. I might just get this game at Japanese launch.

From a business standpoint, it is interesting that Sega has been sitting on a game this far complete (and ready for a Winter release) and haven't mentioned ANYTHING until after PSU PSP sold so well at launch. So now it looks like they're going after the other portable market with a differently styled game to encourage people to get both for different experiences. ;P

I'm digging the new threads for Humans. They always looked so dorky in PSO.

But of course the first boss screen we get just looks like a reskin of the dragon from PSO...

Here's hoping for some actual new bosses and that Rayburn is a product of the designers getting the required dragon boss out of the way.

Hoping? Sega is pretty good at making people hope. Unfortunately that's all they ever do. I would be omgkitties in other circumstances but unfortunately it's probably full of reskin and borrow heavily from PSU's (or PSP's) code.

^This

But while I've got about the lowest expectations for this thing in terms of stuff that is new, I'll still get it. Fuck I'd get a straight up port of PSO for the DS, frankly :|

I can't help but get my hopes up when a new game comes about in the hopes it'll won't be a complete trainwreck. PSP is still decent for what it does and anything that takes inspiration from PSO isn't a bad thing, as I'll admit that I've been wanting (and still want) a true sequel to PSO.

Yes, now they just look like every other fantasy-style RPG human character.

The official Japanese website for Phantasy Star Zero has just been unveiled! A few things of note from it:

* The intent of the game's title is to provoke a feeling of "returning to origins."
* There will be three races and 14 classes.
* You will be able to create your own character.
* The game will take place on the Earth and its moon.
* We have Rappies. (Well, that was a given. But now screenshots confirm it.)
* Dylon City is the name of a new area. (Appears to be a lobby, not a field.)

The site says to expect more information this October.

Based on the first bullet, they can't have every race/gender/job combination in the game. My guess is that there'll be no Newman Rangers nor Cast Forces (which makes sense in the PSO story)

So I'm guessing pre-set, minimally customizable characters like in PSO.
But at least that second bullet confirms we can make our own characters! (well duh...)

I just hope they limit the number of lobbies in the game, I don't like the implementation of them in PSU because it's just wasteful, so many lobbies and most of them could be consolidated into a handful of major hubs and nothing would be lost.

I suppose it's there to give it a 'big world' feel but that was kinda lost ever since they (wisely) made it so you can jump to lobbies. Not to mention that since the game is completely instanced (and the missions are very linear) the game is never going to capture that feel really.

But yeah enough rambling. Here's hoping that any lobbies are just cities and major hubs for the surrounding region (similar to PSP's system, where all of a planet's missions can be accessed from one counter), rather than 'play through missions X and Y to reach Z.'

Quote:

I never really minded that. Each class had a unique look that distinguished it from others, unlike in PSU. I'd like a little more customization (although that might be a bit much to hope for on DS) but I'd still like every class to be easily recognizeable.

I hope so too, Mewn. PSU's lobby system was novel at first but in the long run I agree it is somewhat inconveniant :<

Also mirroring earlier thoughts on classes, predicting no newman gunners or cast techers.

Slight clarification. Someone pointed out to me that the official site says "the Earth and moon" for the location. I was so set on the idea of the planet being given some goofy name I missed that. XD

I edited it into the article earlier, but I figure I might as well mention it here, too.

http://www.g-heaven.net/pso/topics/080916a.html

The Japanese release date for PS0 is set for December 25, 2008. The game will sell for 5040 yen.

New character art there. This is taken from SEGA's TGS site. I see what may be a HUnewearl, FOmar, FOnewm, HUcast and RAmarl.

And then there's red haired, red eyed chicky slightly faded into the background.

Earlier today, Shougai PSO posted a synopsis of an interview with producer Satoshi Sakai that was featured in the latest issue of Nintendo Dream. Here's my translation.

Q: What is the theme of this title?
A: It's a completely new title with a base in PSO. We hope to offer a unique charm with this game which will attract even those who have never touched a Phantasy Star title.

Q: Why the Nintendo DS?
A: Our goal is to reach beyond the current fans by broadening the age range.

Q: Why include ZERO in the title?
A: We intend for it to represent a new beginning to the series as well as give it a more "story-like" quality. The similarities between the abbreviations for PS0 and PSO were intended to appeal to the fans of PSO.

Q: Will you be able to play with unknown people over Wi-Fi?
A: Of course. (No specific mention is made concerning the use of friend codes.)

Q: Will peripherals like the earphones be compatible with this game for voice chat?
A: PS0 will not support voice chat.

Q: Will PSO word select be included?
A: We're still waiting on more information.

Q: PSO's symbol chat?
A: No, but there will be visual chat.

Q: Will ZERO use internet time like PSO?
A: No.

Q: Will PS0's story connect with any previous Phantasy Star titles?
A: No connections. This is a completely new world.

Q: Out of the entire series, which game does PS0's mechanics most closely resemble?
A: They are closest to PSO's.

Q: Will things such as currency and technique names return from PSO?
A: Yes; the majority of item and technique names will remain the same between games.

Q: Taking into consideration the younger crowd that will play this game, is the degree of difficulty being taken down?
A: There were some changes, but no specifics were given.

Q: What is the sales point of PS0 toward PSO Ep.I&II fans?
A: Whether playing alone or as a group of four, we want people to know they can play with others around the world all the time. And even though the world of this game is different, we hope that it still evokes feelings of nostalgia and brings back fond memories.

Well, they will on the only version that will matter ;/

Still you never know, maybe they'll rename Shifta/Deband/Jellen/Zalure to Agtal/Defbal/Agteel/Defdeel in the English translation!

I hope this doesn't mean the game is going to be even easier than PSO/U...

Seeing as its a completely unrelated canon, if balance is too much to ask from Sega (can always hope I guess), could techers be the overpowered ones this time? C:...
