Phantasy Star Online 2 was just announced at TGS! According to the teaser trailer, it's planned for release in 2011 for (Windows) PC. Looking at the screen with all of the text scrolling past in the background, I can see mention of a "new game client approach" and other smaller notes like new lobby functions, an "event zone" and a new party system.

My dreams have come true.

PSO2? No.
PC only? Oh yes.

Oooh here's hoping it can fracture the fan base even more by alienating both PSO diehards and PSU fans

Don't worry, it's not like the US fanbase will find out for another two years!

I've since found some JP blogs that talk about the teaser. One mentions a few other lines of text the writer saw in the trailer: revised synthesis system and new photon arts.

This is where my excitement lies. Not in a true PSO sequel, but by the fact that it won't be held back by an old-ass console. Sure, it'd be great for newer systems that utilize an HDD, but I imagine everything will turn out better if development is for only one platform this time.

Yeah Sega will have to find another excuse for no content this time!

From Shougai PSO, here's a list of all of the text scrolling across the background in the trailer. First, phrases that relate to the game's new components:
* "Action" and "RPG" re-connected
* Increased variety of client orders
* Map functions changing in real time
* User-created story
* New interface for environmental interactions
* Global support
* Thorough racial balances
* Full-user participation events
* Seasonal changes
* New chat system
* New mail functions
* Drastic item synthesis overhaul
* Even wider variety of ways to raise your character
* New direction of event scenes
* Approach from NPCs (New approach maybe?)
* Silhouette changes by add-ons (Not too sure what they mean here.)
* New photon arts (This was partially obscured in the video, so may not be 100% accurate.)
* Community support content (Again, slightly obscured in the video.)
* Additional customizations when you create your character
* Category-based weapon training system (Slightly obscured.)
* Implementation of asynchronous communication
* New party system
* Consideration of enemy cooperation
* Limitless content
* New approach to the game client
* Implementation of a new "life work" (Partially obscured.)
* Daily surprises
* "Trump card" system
* Mutual interaction functionality for new and veteran users

And now for words and phrases that give hints at the world of the game:
* Awakening
* Sealed stone monument
* Pure Dark Falz (Partially obscured.)
* Apostles of _____ (Partially obscured.)
* Camp ship
* Arkz
* Why is darkness born?
* Why is the Great Light no longer here?
* A world in ruin

Taking bets on how many of these claims prove to be completely untrue.

It means support for all of Japan, the only country on the planet.

Synthesis was one of the best things in PSU in my book because it cultivated a player-based economy. But yes, it could be done far better by reworking the inventory-clogging, mostly useless items, balance it better with actual drops, and offer a reason why a player would want crafted items instead of just drops & vice versa

glad to see it returning

The player-based economy was one of the worst parts of PSU for me. Let's go back to basic weapon bartering like we had in PSO, that was so much more interesting.

I don't like the idea of synthesis returning but if they must, all I hope is that:

* Boards have unlimited uses, but to balance it out materials are more rare.
* There's no chance of failure, but perhaps a chance to get a high-quality version of the item instead (so carrot instead of stick).
* Synthing offers more customization than it does at present.
* Finding stuff is still a viable alternative, although synthing should be the best way to get stuff.
* Synthing should take no time at all. You pop something in, maybe it plays a little jingle, and you get your results.
* I'm fine with specializations per character, but no levelling or obnoxious feeding. It sucks horribly - just pick things to specialize in. Maybe offer choices to specialize in weapons of the user's choosing, giving better % of a high-quality synth or better %s or whatever.

That said I agree with Qwerty. PSU was terrible as far as the player-based economy was; just provide the weapons and some sort of tradable currency (Meseta or otherwise) and let the community sort it out.

PSO2? Now who didn't see that coming? :b

It sounds like it has potential but like all things from Sega, I'll save my judgements til more is known.

Espio, you know what you have to do.

EDIT: Nevermind, the text in the image was in the webpage source. It's just a letter from Sakai saying "oh hey guys PSO is ten years old that's a long time lol what a journey it's been but we've made it please stay with us for PSP2 Infinity and PSO2!!!!"

Ah, cool. I may still go over it if I get a chance a little later. We could always go with an extra helping of いただき and お願いいたします.
