The Japanese version of PSOBB is finally coming to an end. At 4:00p.m. JST on December 27, 2010, the servers will go offline permanently. Here is a schedule of how things will go for the final few months.

November 29: Hunters License sales and all special access code usage halted.
November 30 - December 27: Free access to the game servers.
December 14 - December 27: Special bonuses applied (rare drops x10, rare enemies x5, EXP x2).
December 27: Servers go offline at 4:00p.m. JST.

Of course, this is all to make way for PSO2. And as it turns out, there are discussions going on to give PSOBB subscribers access to a PSO2 "user participation test" (among other things). No other details were given, but it says to stay tuned to the official site for more information.

Cool.

You better get into the beta so you can start working on the EncycloPSO2dia.

Good news about the PSO2 Beta, I had a PSOBB JP account (haven't played in years though), hopefully they'll be nice enough to send PSO2 beta invites to everyone that ever signed up for it.

I'm considering signing up for a BB account now, just for the chance of getting into the trial...

Can we put any information we get from a PSO2 beta on an automatic 6-month delay before publishing?

I feel just terrible about killing PSP2 by supporting the release of novelty item passwords and I feel we should work with Sega to ensure that the English community doesn't know how far Japan will be ahead of us. Y'know, to show our goodwill.

6-month sounds too short.

Two years may be a more realistic delay.

Also considering a PSOBB JP account, or reactivating mine that is, to get a better chance at the PSO2 Beta.
"gj st" indeed.

My only regret is that google translate has improved so much.

This is great news! With the shutdown of JP PSOBB, maybe that'll mean I'll stop receiving update emails from them.
I tried to opt out of the emails once but didn't remember my username or password so I was screwed..

Well, I signed up for PSO BB and started playing. What all began as a nice little trip down Nostalgia Boulevard kept getting wrecked by the clunkiness of the game compared to PSU. I'm sure I'd get used to it, but I don't intend on putting much effort into it. Though, I do want to play some of the Ep.IV areas while I can. I tried the east path of the crater and then a Yowie (or however they spelled it in English) 1HKO'd me with vomit or something. :< Of course, when I've only got 40-something HP, it's not much of an accomplishment for the thing.

Pretty sure it was Yowie. Episode 4 was rather brutal to new characters as I recall.

And yeah, I once tried playing BB after having tried PSU, and I just couldn't tolerate it at all.

PSO ep.4 just ain't worth it (for anything more than the music)
I made a schthack PSOBB about a year ago just to finally see ep.4 and after grinding high enough that I could almost play it, it was exceedingly boring. Lots of needlessly large repeated areas and most of the enemies were more annoying to combat than ep.2's

I also tried PSOBB after playing PSU once with a friend because he didn't have PSU at the time, and it felt like everything was restrained and clunky.
A pity, but I think lots of people don't remember that difference or didn't play PSU enough to even feel the difference, considering some comments at PSOW in the PSO2 thread that is.

I think most people were enamored with PSO because it was something fresh at the time, it had a decent balance of rewarding the player until the end game (by that time you're hooked), and there was always a challenge.

PSU you had to grind everything, especially at launch. Plus Sega's drip feed. Plus not getting real drops but just boards.

But to me playing PSO now is like playing Diablo 2. It seems like a great idea until I actually go back and play it, only to be turned off by how clunky the gameplay is compared to PSP2 (I'm even having problems going back to PSU without my combat roll & guard now). I served my several hundred hours in PSO as a FOmar, casting Jellen and spamming Gifoie until rooms were dead. I don't feel the need to dwell on the past any longer.

PSO was good, even revolutionary for the time, but that's the problem. What good is the trailblazer when the trail has long gone cold?

Campfire was revolutionary back in the days. Few complain about the modern alternatives.

It's muscle memory. You do certain things in one game and once you go play a different game or a different installment in the series, oftentimes you'll still end up trying to do the action from the other game. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to dodge roll and block in PSU and have it obviously not work. I've also noticed just attack timing with melee weapons on PSU becomes a lot more difficult after having played PSP2 for a while.

PSO is a bit different for me though, I've been playing it for 10 years so it's really easy to distinguish it as a different game with different mechanics. Though I'll still end up trying to move the camera with the right stick or switch overhead names with the wrong button occasionally.

I can't play PSO because I try to aim. I know, weird concept, just feels natural to me.

You forgot the maze like level design too. Combine those two and you get a summary of most of PSO's areas. Never played Ruins or Seabed that much for that reason. Takes forever to get through them if you don't know the best route and yet its nearly impossible to remember what that route is.

schlagwerk wrote:

Most? There's an enemy that isn't annoying to fight there?! Oh right, I guess Sand Rappies aren't too bad. But with PSO's super flinch mechanic and knocking you over when you're hit by a strong attack, everything else can be annoying there. I swear they built the enemy AIs in those areas for the sole reason of exploiting these flaws. Not to mention how the game handles 0 damage being inflicted, which is easy to cause with a FOmarl with high level J/Z. Ah yes, nothing like a mob of enemies bitch slapping you from 20 feet away constantly making it impossible to do almost anything because you keep doing the block animation.

I've tried several times to get back into PSO via Schtack and just could never do it. The nostalgia wears off quickly when it sinks in how hard it is to get the rares you want and how unrefined the battle system feels.
